Research
My research agenda focuses on the experiences of gender and sexuality in different social locations. I work in four empirical areas; (1) gender and sexual interactions, (2) gender, sexuality, family, and youth, (3) gender and health, (4) pedagogy. I utilise mixed methodology with an emphasis on feminist qualitative approaches. I approach my topics using a variety of theoretical perspectives including, but not limited to: identity theory, gender performativity, feminist theory, trans and intersex scholarship, symbolic interactionism, masculinities and femininities.

Gender and Sexual interactionsParticipate the study here https://pleasurestudy.weebly.com/
My research focuses on how gender, when considered as more complex than simply gender identity, influences the performance of sexual pleasure. Though we have determined there are clear gendered differences in who is more likely to experience sexual pleasure and thus who is likely to perform it, we have not determined why. Moreover, previous research has focused on cis individuals. Therefore, I seek to understand how the pleasure experiences of trans and gender non-conforming folks, compares to that of cis men and women. In doing this, I hope not only to uncover some of the gendered mechanisms behind the pleasure gap but also to disrupt the fallacy that people of shared gender identities labels experience gender in the same way. I argue, the implications of this study will mean we can better address and educate people about the gendered effects on sexual pleasure. This study’s unique contribution is the bridging of feminist gender theory and social psychological thought as well as deepening and expanding current knowledge on performed sexual pleasures and the pleasure gap.

Gender, Sexuality, Family, and Youth

This work spans various paths One project focuses on the experiences of gender and sexuality for youth who attend summer camp in the U.S.A. My first article titled Queer at Camp, experiences of gender and sexuality non-conforming campers at U.S based summer camps looks at how campers negotiate these unique, but highly hetero- and cisnormative spaces. It is a unique, but important spatial locale that is understudied in both sexualities and wider sociological inquiry. I also have a chapter in Gender, Sexuality, and Race in the Digital Age. This work titled Let’s Talk About Porn - The Perceived Effect of Online Mainstream Pornography of LGBTQ Youth, addresses how LGBTQ youths sexual experiences are influenced by pornography. In this chapter, I examine the how LGBTQ people, who grew up in the ‘internet generation’, perceived the effect of mainstream online video pornography on themselves and their peers. In addition Nathalie Ingraham and I published on LGBTQ+ Family Expansion in the Age of COVID-19. This project became a catalyst for the Contemporary Family Conceptions.
